“On seeing the call for articles related to “The First Graduate” marking International Women’s Day for 2014, I wanted to do a write up on my aunt Dr.Vijayalakshmi Nambiar. She is currently the Principal of Manghanmal Udharam College of Commerce in Pune. She as a woman has been the benchmark for us kids, irrespective of gender in our family. I am writing this as a mark of tribute to her.
She was the youngest in a family of five children. Her father did not deny basic education to his children and put all his children in the nearby convent that taught in the regional language. However my aunt was coaxed by their neighbour to study in an English medium convent. She ensured she got into it by throwing tantrums everyday.This was her stepping stone and from then on she moved on in life to complete her Doctorate in Management from the University of Pune. She is the first “graduate” in the family and now has the distinction of being the only “Doctorate” in the family.”
