“I am N.Sarojini Devi, Retd Dietician, Government Medical College, Thiruvanathapuram. I was the seventh and the youngest born to my parents Sri K.Narayana Pillai and Smt L.Narayani Amma.I had three sisters and three brothers. My parents belonged to a remote village Thiruvithamcodu in Kerala. Now that is part of KanyaKumari after the formation of Kerala in1956. I started my education in my native village and when my family shifted to Trivandrum I joined The Cottonhill Girls High School and studied there upto 6th std. Then my father who was in the Indian Railways got transfered to Calcutta(now Kolkata) and I completed my 10th std from National High School there . My father’s retirement brought us back to Trivandrum and i joined the N.S.S college for Women and completed my graduation in B.SC (Home Science) in 1965. Even though i joined for M.A Sociology in the Loyola College the job offer was more lucrative for a middle class girl and I joined The Medical College Trivandrum as Dietician and retired from service on July 2000 after serving for more than 32 years. I got married in the year 1968 and have three children; my husband who was addicted to alchoholism passed away early and I single-handedly brought up my children. The job I had helped me in bringing them up in a reasonable way, though they have not attained great heights in life as expected by me; I am happy that I could do at least this much because of the job I had with the Kerala Government. Now I am leading a retired life and am happy that I have a decent pension so that I don’t have to depend on my children. I could attain all this only because of my education .”
